FINAL YEAR COLLEGE PROJECT

ABOUT

Y2K is a final year college group project that aimed to investigate the nostalgia and recent resurgence of past media forms such as vinyl, film photography and more, in Generation Z.

VIDEOS

Y2K interviewed members of Generation Z to further understand this nostalgia. Videos interviews of Gen Z with accompanying animation was then created. These videos were then put onto real VHS tapes, displayed at our interactive installation.

VIDEO 1: FILM PHOTOGRAPHY

Shaunamay takes us down memory lane with her love for film. You will learn how she discovered her interest for photography and what she loves about the analogue process in particular.

VIDEO 2: TV BUMPERS

Niall takes us down memory lane with his love and nostalgia for old-school TV Bumpers. This is an old media form that featured on the likes of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network and MTV.

Installation

The interactive installation lets visitiors reflect on the appeal and drawbacks of old media and their place in the 21st century.

The videos interviews were put onto real VHS tapes and were available to play on CRT (cathode ray tube) televisions via VCR players at our installation.

I was responsible for setting up this station, maintaining it, and troubleshooting throughout the exhibition.

The vinyl station encouraged guests to play old damaged vinyl records from a local record shop, highlighting the differences between analogue and digital media, and the physical damage that can occur to analogue media.

There was a camcorder that guests were free to engage with, its video feed linked directly to a CRT TV that guests could see. Participants could experiment in real time with the camcorder’s visual effect and were free to take pictures.

I was responsible for creating this setup, acquiring the equipment, and maintaining it throughout the entire exhibition.

VHS TAPES

I was responsible for transferring the videos from digital format (mp4) to physical VHS. Since I cannot physically play the VHS tape online, here is one of the videos on VHS tape transferred back to mp4.
